Christmas Mix

Mattias sent us a raw mix of how far we’ve come for Christmas. Things sound promising! I just realised we need to get Mr Hellsberg into the studio in order for him to say something in the breakdown of Unpleasant Man.

Harmonies and Christmas Break

Posted by christian on Friday Dec 4, 2009 Under Recording

Last night Malena and Lina added some harmonies to Mirepoix, Garden City and Green Fire! It sounded great and made the songs even better.

Unfortunately the studio is unavailable for the weeks around Christmas, so we’ll have a recording break until January 12th. I’ll probably record some lead vocals at home during the holidays for some parts that we are not completely happy with.

Todo after Christmas:

  • Add more backup vocals (the girls sounded so good we certainly want more!)
  • Perfect the lead vox
  • Final fixes and adjustments
  • Mix and master
  • Start working on the cover art with Mogge

Marvellous Marshall & Pump Organ Goodness

Posted by christian on Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 Under Recording

Another 6 hours in the studio today. The minute I had dialed in the Marshall on “Garden City” we knew we could throw out the three distortion guitar channels we had before. For the dirty sounds, the Marshall (with some effect pedal love) sounded better than all the other three tracks together. I am very happy I traded in the Fender head and went back to using Marshall as my main amp :-)

There is an old pump organ in the studio, that probably is from a class room back in the good old days. I tried to put down some background harmonies with it on “Mirepoix” and “Unpleasant Man”, and once I figured out the chords it sounded great! Jonas and Mårten has some photos that they’ll upload for your viewing pleasure.

Next week is vocals time. 4.5 songs need main vox before we are done. Then we pretty much only have background vocals and other decorations before mixing begins!

Harmonica and more vocals

Posted by christian on Friday Nov 6, 2009 Under Recording

After another two nights in the studio we now have lead vocals on 6 songs and bass on 10!

Last night Otto joined us for some harmonica and keyboards and the songs really came alive.

A special hello goes out to his parents. Next week we’ll add some more Marshall goodness, and the week after that it is time to finish those vocals.

Guitar time

Posted by christian on Friday Oct 9, 2009 Under Recording

Yesterday I added the basic guitar parts to 8 songs on the album. After about 8 hours both mine and Mattias’s ears stopped working.

This is what the live room looked like with all the toys:

I complemented my own rig with some great amps and guitars borrowed from friends. The Twin Reverb and 60′s AC30 sounded great together for the cleaner parts, played by a Telecaster. My Super-Sonic teamed up with another Fender amp to deliver the dirt. I had to change strings on the trusty Stratocaster twice before I was happy with the sound.

This is what I looked like when posing as a guitar hero for the camera:

Yes I am a very cool man. More guitar and hopefully some vocals will be added on Thursday.

An update on the record

Posted by christian on Friday Sep 25, 2009 Under Recording

After finishing the grand Crayfish 2009 tour, we have resumed working on the Bocadillo record.

As of now, we have recorded drums and bass on 9 songs:

  • Super Duper
  • Garden City
  • No One Around
  • Polystyrene Head
  • Green Fire
  • Steve is About to Blow
  • Burger Rings
  • The Unpleasant Man
  • Blinker Man

A couple of others (Mirepoix, Waiting for Neal, Microphone Tree) are underway. We’ll see if they make it on to the album. In a few days I’ll camp out in the studio with Mattias and lay down the guitar tracks. After that there will be vocals, harmonies,  lead instruments and bling bling. If all goes well, we should end up with a finished album around or after Christmas – and you will all be invited to the release party!

The making of Bocadillo

Posted by christian on Wednesday May 20, 2009 Under Recording

On Monday we are going back to the studio to start recording the first proper Golden Rocket Pony album!

Mattias Johansson will act as engineer/producer and a bunch of people will help out playing instruments and/or singing. We are aiming to record about 10 songs, in all we should be finished before Christmas.

We will be making a mini documentary along the way that will be put up on YouTube, so you
can follow along.

First up: The rythm section!

A new microphone…

Posted by jonas on Friday Apr 17, 2009 Under Recording

…has been delivered!
It’s a classic, the Shure Beta 52A. A dynamic kick drum microphone. We will also try to catch some low-pitched bass guitar tones with this new baby. But my guess is that mostly the kick drum will sound a lot better from now on…I’m sure CV will tell you a bit more about this later on.
